Regional Technology Education Consortium RTEC, Radford University NSF ATE project provided a significant number of undertakings for the eleven regional VCCS colleges which participated in the grant and outlined a blueprint for the community colleges to build pathways to four year institutions. The three year project was awarded in August 2002 award summary with an extension through September 2006. Accomplishments and noted achievements include:
- Extraordinary cooperation of IT faculty from the VCCS and RU in the area of curriculum development. This cooperation has yielded significant benefits that have accelerated the development of articulation agreements. As of January 2007, thirteen signed articulation agreements have been established between Radford University and the respective VCCS colleges. Under the new articulation agreements, students earning an associate degree in computer science from one of the Consortiums community colleges could transfer to Radford University and complete a bachelors degree in Information Technology or Computer Science in two years.
- RTEC initiative directly supported the VCCS IT faculty with the complete revision of their IT courses in fall 2003. These VCCS IT curricula are commonly based on the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) CC2001 guidelines, the same as the curriculum outline used by RU and other four-year schools. As a result, articulation of these model curricula is easily achieved.
- Working Connections. Providing the largest systemic and capacity building impact in the mid-Atlantic region for introduction or improvement of technology courses in community colleges, Radford University has been hosting the Working Connections Summer Institute providing graduate courses and non-credit professional development courses for community college faculty. A total of 273 faculty have participated from 2003-2006 in twenty-two track sessions cover the latest in information technology topics.
- Building a community of practice. Sustaining and driving the impact of these accomplishments into the future is the goal of this community of practice. The final activity of RTEC was setting up this server that is hosting the MAWC CoP site.
